Another injury for Kylian Mbappé, his seventh since joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2014, although this time the problem occurred while playing for the French national team. Real Madrid confirmed that the striker suffered a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee during the Nations League match against Turkey and is expected to be sidelined for around two weeks.
Mbappé was injured during the play that led to his goal in France’s 1-0 victory. He attempted to continue after receiving medical attention, but ultimately asked to be substituted. The French Football Federation reported that he suffered a tendon injury and will miss his team’s upcoming matches.
The concern in Madrid is mainly related to the affected area. The left knee already hampered much of the Frenchman’s last season and caused a series of absences between December 2025 and the first months of 2026.
Mbappé’s first problem as a Real Madrid player came on September 24, 2024. During a LaLiga match against Alavés , he suffered a hamstring injury in his left leg and missed the derby against Atlético de Madrid .
On December 10th of that year, he suffered another injury. The Frenchman scored against Atalanta in the Champions League and left the field in the 36th minute due to muscle discomfort. He was unable to play in the following league match against Rayo Vallecano .
In February 2025, he suffered a hematoma in his calf after a tackle by Carlos Romero during the match between Espanyol and Real Madrid. The striker missed the Copa del Rey match against Leganés.
A month later he suffered a sprained right ankle against Arsenal in the Champions League and did not play against Athletic Club and Getafe , who, in any case, could not participate against the Lions either because he was serving a red card suspension.
The knee problem
December 2025 marked the beginning of the period that caused him the most absences. Mbappé began experiencing discomfort in his left knee, and Real Madrid announced on the last day of the year that he had a sprain.
The Frenchman was unable to play against Real Betis and Atlético Madrid. The problem resurfaced in the first months of 2026, keeping him out of matches against Benfica, Getafe, Celta Vigo , Manchester City , and Elche . In total, the knee problems caused him to miss seven games at the beginning of the year.
